Live - Wood Carving with Alexander Grabovetskiy - YouTube
okay I can see that uh as somebody connected back good to see you again wonderful people my apologies okay I don't know what is going on uh
everything is the same what i did is just restored my live stream and now it looks much better and I hope it's gonna stay that way I hope the sound is okay picture is okay quality is okay no buffering internet is okay so hopefully you know so everything is gonna be good but anyway so one of the last questions I had I know I lost a lot of people you know from the previous stream but anyway so one of the questions I had what brand of tools I really like to use okay for the wood carving uh it all depends it's not about the brand uh I actually done it on the whole live stream about the decision I have to make about the brand of tools and that
depends on what type of job you do because the different brands they produce different quality of tools not just the quality but different shapes okay it could be the same number but the particular brand does it little differently and it's gonna work much better in certain uh application okay but what you see right now uh you see one of the parts of venetian project okay so you saw some of it i'm still working on that and the whole thing is going to be online the whole thing is going to be online mark good to see you good afternoon to you too okay i hope it's good weather in cincinnati okay and i hope you finished school project flowers i'm talking about so let me see who else connects it right
here yes and if there's a problem please let me know if there's a problem with the quality of the picture and so on i hope there's uh no problem but who knows let me carve a little bit and say a little more about the tools okay for example i'm using right now number 11 okay so that is number 11 and in this case 3 millimeters and that number 11 is a u shape i'll show you a bigger one that's like a letter u okay so see that profile right here and the in my opinion uh as far as the number 11 file does excellent job i really like how they do number 11s and it's not
a gouch it's a veiner okay so and i like file in this case so in another case let's say if i would use uh like number three a more flat gouge like this one okay i really really love uh henry taylor even if it doesn't look too appealing but the steel they use it's excellent still i don't know what's going on you know i've got some kind of sticker going on okay okay but what i like about it it's a really really thin steel what they use and i can actually slice through the wood without any problem okay so that is uh like the flatter tools uh let's say uh my favorite so far it's a little thicker it's this one okay
and i'm not going to tell you the brand of this tool but this is my favorite one right so there's no reason because it's not available on the market so that's why i'm not i'm going to tell you the brand but it's absolutely the best steel all right my go to brand would be um ashley isles okay i really love ashley isles tools it's those guys okay i really like them i really love them okay so those are the ashley isles tools english made yeah they're not looking too appealing but they really really nice and see how thick they are so that is why i like those okay that's why i love them so those are the the brands my favorite brands i hope it answers the question and there's more brands than it of course there's a two cherries some of the tools really excellent for
example i like the long bent two cherry stools they're really good ones and so on but let me carve let me carve and if you have a question i would love to answer it if you do have a question by the way this piece is going to be available um entirely online in my school of wood carving okay and if you want to see the development of it so you have to be part of my school although i already see some people who actually are part of my school am i missing something am i still on youtube am i still on
facebook and if you're watching me on facebook i would highly encourage you to go to my youtube channel okay that would be youtube forward slash and just put my last name grabovetsky know it's hard to spell but that is my name that is my name get the right tool surely thank you very much so youtube stream is good that's good okay uh will is asking
how would you sharpen a firmer gouge i'm not sure if i understand the question what do you mean by firmware gouge i i i i sharpen all my gouges pretty much the same way it doesn't matter what shape and what profile and what sweep i still sharpen them about the same way okay and my preferred way it's just using machine because i really don't have time and i love i love to use um you know this guy right here it's a work sharp okay so and that is my go to machine for the sharpening so that is how i approach it and if you really want to know my approach to sharpening online on my
school site school of woodcarving.com i have multiple videos about my approach you know to you know all types of gouges and so on back bends straight gouges uh you know all types so let me see the curved firmware gouge with the inside bevel i have some a really extreme example of the inside bevel okay uh let me show you that once you okay so that is the number nine okay number nine but on inside you can see it's just extreme bevel okay so and uh the way i do uh the outside i would just approach the same way
okay uh outside i would just take it to the machine use my jigs and just establish whatever the shape i need on the outside and on inside on the inside i would just use the sleep stones i think that is probably the easiest way slip stones and i also have like a couple ways a couple machines i mean i can just do on a tormach buffing wheel attachment on one of the sides and i also have the same thing a leather buffing wheel on my protac machine okay which is the cheapest machine you can buy and that is just the buffing wheel and i can just take it to the perfection pretty much on inside all right so i hope it answers okay so i hope it answers so now paul i do think everyone who
carves should get gonzales tool i use mine almost every day yes sir but there's a problem okay there is a problem with gonzalo's i can tell you so the tool you talking about is uh this guy right here okay so that is the gonzales tool okay so gonzales skew and that's one of the best best best tools a multi-tool in one so you can do a lot of work with that and yes i said that there's a problem and the problem is you really can't find them on the market they all sold out uh the only one place in the united states sold them tools for for workingwood.com and it's unavailable it's just out of stock so you really have to wait uh or just to make
your own i mean it's possible to do uh that gonzales tool uh the option which you could do you can get to like this uh you know just the normal um you know skew and just to reshape it whatever the shape you want to reshape right there just normal skew just place it and reshape it and sharpen it so and it's going to become your gonzales tool okay and for those of you who don't know what the gonzalez stole it's uh it's this tool it just looks like a skew but it's just a multi-use tool and i use it all the time also you know you can just work with that tool pretty much any concaves and convex problems so now john is saying i love curly carving knife carving in useful
videos can you recommend where research uh this old old design styles not i'm not sure you you really i don't think you can research it you have to just probably search for a old old like 9th century 8th century european carvings you will find some and yes that project i think is one of the most favorite for the beginners on my school site school of foodcarving.com so and let me let me see if uh if i can find the picture of it people who understand what we are talking about i don't know if i can find it or not and i don't think so
sorry wonderful people can't find it but anyway so maybe what i can do uh we can carve little more of those one knife technique carvings like a curly board there's a multiple styles but if you get the idea behind of the curliness itself it's going to be much easier for you to carve pretty much any design and you can probably even design yourself okay and maybe i have to just record another course maybe not the bird but maybe fish who knows you know flowers fish and just a one knife technique with one knife technique uh mark is saying be careful the file version of gonzalez
is you know it's sharp on both ends it's actually called differently okay there's a different name for the tool which looks uh same like gonzales but it's not gonzalo's tool and that's really dangerous the problem with those tools like mark usain when you carving when you're carving so you pretty much uh sometimes just the pressing with your finger you're just trying to use that as a leverage and uh with the file tool you can cut yourself okay so i don't use it maybe i can find just to show it to you what i mean by i obviously have it but i don't use it that's why it's somewhere right here i found a couple of them okay so what you're talking about that's uh those guys okay those two tools okay by file right so they look similar
to the gonzales especially this one they look similar but they are not because file has you know that edge also sharpen and i understand the idea so you can just work on the pool you know you can pull towards yourself and just to get the really nice details and maybe there is a place but for me i'm working every day i have a tendency just sometimes just to push just like that using my finger and that creates the problem so i can cut myself so and the that is absolutely one of the greatest points uh what q mark said okay but it's not that tool but i don't use it to know okay like never okay it's still usable if you're really careful but you know i don't use it it's gonna work
but that's not the best all right and i've got lots of junk all over let me know do you like that uh or not i mean uh this piece it's a part of that venetian project if you like it give me a some thumbs up please okay i really do appreciate if you're gonna give me some love or something let me brag let me brag a little bit i brought a couple gifts from a mark adams school so number one it's about a week and a half i i came back from mark adams from indianapolis i was teaching class and was it actually a really nice project i think it's a pretty cool project you know those flowers okay
let me show you closer i don't know you see them so that is the project from uh mark adams school okay so and uh why i'm really proud about that class uh most of the people most of the people they did not carve before okay some of them yes carved and some of them for years but some of them never touched the tool before we started the class and all all of those people and you probably watched my previous video they all finished almost finished i should say and here's the picture okay here's the picture of those guys and i'm really proud and actually not everyone in this picture uh person who took that picture he chopped one of the person there's more
people actually on the left side okay so they all finished so i'm really really happy with the results it's number one okay let me show you one more time for you or just to catch it so that is what you are able to do in just the one week class even if you never carved just to check my calendar i'm going to be uh in july back in mark adams school and i'm going to be in june uh in the state of maine hold on just a second uh if you want to check in personal classes that's a main cost workshops dot com i'm going to be in june teaching in person and if you want to shake my hand and work with me just go right there and mark adams in july okay mark adams.com so now uh shirley is saying uh wow
that's an incredible piece for non-carvers yes i was surprised myself i was surprised but that's the thing about the classes when i'm teaching in person mark who asked question before he mentioned about zala stool in a comment above he is actually in my class almost all the time okay he's not missing almost any of the classes he missed first year like about uh five years ago because it was sold out before he could even buy you know the place it was sold out and he was uh on a waitlist this year he almost got in okay because uh he couldn't get in right away it was sold out but then one person cancelled and the same morning mark uh took the place of that canceled per person okay but he's always right there
and he is a living proof that every class when i'm teaching in person i never i absolutely never never never never repeat myself okay so we always do something different check it out i mean i've got multiple videos on youtube uh like in person classes every project is absolutely different okay so we're not gonna carve the same project in in maine we're not going to carve the same project in uh mark adams school later uh like in july so it's all gonna be different so that is why you know i have people who's coming back all the time right um but um james is saying proper teaching with amazing results i really do appreciate that thank you very much but it's not what i want to brag about okay what i would like to brag about i tried today is a second live stream
and i couldn't get in for some reason for the technical uh issues but anyway so i've got a couple gifts i brought from that school okay so this one is this one okay right here it's beautiful mullet gorgeous okay absolutely gorgeous okay and i love it i love it i love it i love it i love it okay let me show you closer right here it's a beautiful mallet i'm not gonna use it okay it's for the collection and uh it's one of them and the second i i've i've got mullet it's this one okay it's also beautiful beautiful mallet with some brass in it and that's exactly 20 ounces okay so that is a couple gifts and yes i do collect the mallets i i love mallets especially made
by famous people uh you know like this one is uh done by uh arizera one of the famous woodturners this one right here is done by michael hasseleck wood turner and you're probably familiar with him if you know a little bit about woodturning and so on so those are famous people i love them okay so let me check another one on your back wall right on the blinds so you are talking about another project uh this one yes that was also uh one of the classes uh with it one week class it was uh byzantine style acanthus and that is a unique style actually byzantine i love that style because it was made for the gold leaf for you just to get on inside and so on it's it's beautiful piece
okay so i love that and by the way i'm going to do online for my school of wood carving about the same project surely my husband has a woodturner he made my mallet and um that that was really wonderful okay i love like i said i love mullets okay i also do do have a lathe and i can make a mallet for myself so i just broke something but that is a special gift from special people hey if you want to make mallet for me i'll i'll accept that okay send it my way i'll i'll be happy mallet is a my collection okay my love all right okay let me carve a little
and i just broke you know wasn't too careful you know with my hand when i was showing mullet and i broke the piece so i'll take it out not a big deal not the big deal richard thank you very much beautiful peace alex good afternoon from california
thank you richard how many people we have i hope you didn't lose too many okay wonderful people i'm going to continue to carve and uh if you want to see the whole development of this piece including all the flowers and you know whatever the really deep undercuts i've done in some of the areas like right here so you really have to be a part of my school or if you are part of my school just go ahead and watch all the videos okay don't skip so you're missing uh a lot of tricks if you skip videos i know there's a lots of videos like over 2500 i checked yesterday how many videos i've got uh online as of today already posted okay how many videos i've got in my school i should say school of foodcarving.com and i've got and i've got 2554 videos
okay so 2554 and by the end of this year it could be like 3 000 videos okay and it's just to post it okay it's not uh i have a lot more you can see by that project so i already got a lot more videos uh filmed i just uh not edited yet so i still have to edit those still have to edit those okay thank you very much wonderful people have a good day and check my calendar just go on my website on schoolfoodcarving.com go on menu and just to check in person okay alex i learned by watching your hands as you carve more close-up of your hands as you carve would be appreciated oh yes
absolutely and again bruce you are part of my school just go ahead and watch all those videos i've got a bunch of close-ups okay really close uh i know one of the people he's also long time already i mean since the beginning almost uh part of my school and he also just said the same thing sometimes he watches and re-watches again the same videos okay he just wants to watch how i move my hands and so on without even listening my accent all right you

Eric
Alex. Will you have the flower project that u guys did at Marc adams as part of ur online school collection? Seems very interesting. Thanks
. Good Idea, We can make a similar one.
We can do a similar one!
Thanks!! Will look forward to it- Cheers
I would also like to do a project like this.
It would be nice to have some similar projects that are more doable for intermediate carving (such as you did with the carving of grape leaves on the vase) sprinkled between the learning of more advanced carving as we follow your huge Venice Room carving. (Which is wonderful!)
Soon I will finish Venice Room project and will do a few small size carvings for school only. I will include simple flowers project similar to what we carved in Marc Adams School.
That will be great Alex.
