Magnificent carving Alex.. I was hoping you were going to show what finishing techniques you would use/apply to this level detail. 🙂
something i struggle with is choosing a finish that isn’t a nightmare to apply but that offers longevity and ease of maintenance.. (dusting/cleaning the carving later)

Robert,
In this case I did not apply any finish. The client did not want anything on it. Same as Grinling Gibbons, he never applied any finish.
But if You want. You can use Shellac, just dilute it and penetrate with it. It will take a few coats, but the finish will be great and if You did not use sandpaper, grain should not raise.
