Woodcarving..Art or Craft?
My perspective is it depends. On one hand there are Master Artisans such as your self whom have acquired the skill level necessary to achieve what I would call Art. On the other hand there are lessor Artisans whom have not achieved such a refined skill level therefore their work may only be seen as craft…HHmm…or…maybe im over thinking it…Beautifully hand carved custom (anything)=Art…or standard hand carved house number sign= craft..?

After some thought to Me It’s not Carving is Art or Craft…I think the Art or craft is in the subject/object being created….I had to sit and think on that one for a bit…Thank You Alex.

I believe Art is mans attempt to imitate Gods creations or an attempt to perfect our creative gifts from God. This could be in a medium such as wood, paint, metal, clay, paint, ink, food or music and dance.

It’s art NO DOUBT, but you could also call it woodcraft, still doesn’t change the fact it’s art. It’s art when you call it art, when you chose to express something through in this chase the medium of wood.

I love the way You said: “express something through in this chase the medium of wood.”

I’m learning so much watching every cut you make – very helpful. But I think I’m enjoying your monologue and philosophy of carving just as much. I’m beginning to speak with a Russian accent.

Wood carving. ART or CRAFT? Actually the way you carve it is a combination of the two. Craftsmanship come from understanding the various uses of the various tools AND from expanding on those various uses to accomplish even more than was originally intended. The artistic style is coming from the artist inside of you, your interpretations of the various objects you are attempting to display with your carving. Your craftsmanship can only carry you so far, it takes the artistic skills of the artist to bring forth the life of natural objects beyond the limitations of the craftsmanship tools. The artists brings life to the object, the craftsmanship only creates the basic outline of any given object while the artist gives those objects the ability to breathe or show love and beauty. At least that is my opinion. For whatever that opinion is worth.
