Thank You!

Hi Alex. Very beautiful carving. Love it. For these concave cuts ur using a # 9 sweep. For similar cuts in other cravings on this site u have used a # 11 (veiner). Just curious to learn what is the thought process behind it. Thanks

I love #11 personally. It this project I am showing, that the same task could be done by using other tools as weel.

Hello Alex, first of all congrats on your wood artwork. I consider you the Grinling Gibbons of our time. Currently I’m trying to do the Corinthian Acanthus Leaf. On the video I see you use an Ashley Iles Fishtail 13 mm and a 10.5 mm Ashley Illes 10.5 mm, both with sweep 9. I leave in Italy and I’ve look to buy these two tool everywhere, but there is no sellers here, and Ashley Illes Toolstore are out of stock, same for Ariou. Remain Henry Taylor. Here will be much easier buy Pfeil, Two Cherry, Dasdra or Stubai, but sweep of these tools I don’t know if matches with London pattern (nr 9 Ashley will be same of nr 9 Pfeil or Two Cherry? if not I should buy nr 8 instead?). I hope you can suggest me how to proceed. I had also some problem with first attempt to do the Acanthus Leaf: I had carve too deep with Pfeil big gauge nr 7 near the pipes of Leaf, I think, the leafs near the pipes has to be “shallower” right?
I hope in your answer
Patrick

Well, well, well, look at you, trying to carve the Corinthian Acanthus Leaf like a true woodcarving pro! And thank you for the kind words, but let’s not get too carried away with comparing me to the legendary Grinling Gibbons, shall we? Now, on to your tool troubles – oh, the struggles of living in Italy and not being able to easily find the exact tools you need. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack! But fear not, my friend. While Ashley Illes may be out of stock, there are plenty of other reputable tool brands out there, like Pfeil, Two Cherry, Dasdra, and Stubai, that should do the trick. As for the sweep of the tools, to match the London pattern with the proper gauge formula is #9 of London -1= #8 Euro pattern. But Don’t worry too much about matching exactly, you can use #9 Pfeil or #8 Pfeil.. Both sweeps will do the trick.

And as for your first attempt at the Acanthus Leaf, don’t worry about carving too deep near the pipes – we all make mistakes! Just keep practicing and refining your technique, and soon enough, you’ll be carving those leaves like a pro. Keep up the great work, Patrick!

Hello dear Alexander. Sorry for my late response. I had really appreciated your answer, now Is clear the sweep difference between english Sheffield list and european one. Tank you very much for the formula and for your gauges sweeps tips. I agree with you, in Italy Pfeil and Stubai are very common, even some retailer had Dasdra and Two Cherry, now i m using most Pfeil, some Dasdra and Stubai. Sure, even i had done a mistake I m doing again this beautiful Corinthian Acacantus Leaf hoping to do no other mistake, I take long time but i m learning how work acantus leaf.
About you I m really happy to have you as Master, from you I have learn a lot compared to other web site, exemple how to make realisic flower, the extreme undercutting, the golden ratio etc. And looking at your masterpiece my opinion remain that you are the Grinling Gibbons of out times. Thanks a lot Dear Master, and have a good Week End.
